Design and display

Slim, curved build

The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is now thinner than ever as just 71.4mm thick, with thanks to its slightly curved build. It’s also water-resistant now – certified as IP68 – meaning it can safely be submerged in 1.5m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

Bright, powerful screen

The A5 (2017) has a 5.2-inch Full HD display, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. There’s also Samsung’s Super AMOLED screen technology, to make sure everything you do on the phone looks amazing.

Improved camera

On the back of the phone is 16MP sensor, jam-packed with great features to take your photography game to the next level. But it’s not just your still photography that will benefit, as you can also shoot 1080p video at 30fps.

Equally awesome selfies

There’s a secondary 16MP camera on the front of the A5 (2017) too - a huge spec for a mid-range smartphone. All your selfies will look great, as will your video calls recorded in Full HD resolution.

Under the hood

More power

Move between apps without any annoying buffering screens with the super-powered 1.9GHz octa-core processor. Lots of processing power essentially means you can do more at once - stream movies in Full HD and enjoy the biggest games with no lag time.

Speed charging

The 3,000mAh battery isn’t just able to store over a day’s worth of charge, but it can be powered up quicker than ever with the new USB technology. Gone is the micro USB input, making room for the reversible Type-C port, for fast charging and swift data transfer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2 years on and hard to say goodbye I'm due an upgrade come Christmas. I've had this phone for 2 years now. And from day one until I trade this phone in it has none stop delivered outstanding battery life and performance of had no issues with this phone and I'm sticking with the A series afterwards. I highly recommend this phone.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Laggy, underwhelming and extremely irritating This phone seemed good at first. The camera seemed was alright, and it had a nice screen. But that's as far as the good things about this phone go. Two years on and this is an extremely laggy and slow device which I'll be lucky to last past 7pm. It has had audio problems, with the built-in speaker cutting out for no reason. That was fixed by an update, but now there are severe Bluetooth issues. It keeps on stuttering if connected to Bluetooth and Wifi at the same time. 2 years on and there are far better, cheaper alternatives to this. The Huawei P20 Lite, for example, has a great camera and is as fast as flagship devices. It even looks great. Save yourself the

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good battery Positives: Long battery life, has a button on the front, lovely colour, good camera. Negatives: No notification light (seriously), icons don't update so there's a white border around certain apps, it doesn't connect to data networks even when it says it has a strong signal (loading this was an ordeal). For reference, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini I had before was far better. I feel like I massively downgraded. Still better than an iPhone, Apple aren't getting a penny from me. This phone is fine if you want to take photos, make phone calls and leave your charger at home. It's affordable and does the job, but it's quite frustrating when you've had any other Samsung phone before it (which are now inexplicably discontinued???)
