How to change mobile network and keep the same number

If you’ve changed network and you’ve got a new phone or SIM card, you might be asking yourself “Can I keep my mobile number if I change provider?”

It’s a fair question. Your old mobile number is the one that all your friends and family know, after all. Luckily, it’s quick and easy to transfer it to the new network you’ve just joined. To help you do this, we’ve got all the information you need below.

Can I keep my number on SIM only?

If you want to move to a SIM only deal on another network, you can still keep your mobile number. The same process applies whatever kind of plan you choose, from SIM only to pay monthly.

PAC codes explained

The first thing you’ll need if you want to keep your number is a PAC.

What is a PAC code?

A PAC code (Port Authorisation Code) lets you transfer your mobile number from your old network to your new SIM card. What does a PAC code look like? Well, it’s usually nine characters long, consisting of three letters and six numbers.

Why do I need a PAC code?

If you’re moving from one network to another, you’ll need a PAC code before you disconnect your old SIM. If you don’t, you won’t be able to transfer your number.

How long does a PAC code last?

PAC codes are valid for 30 days. If you run out of time and don’t get the chance to use it before it expires, it’s not the end of the world. You can simply request another one from your old network.

How long does a PAC code take to work?

Once you’ve given your PAC code to your new network, your number transfer will usually be scheduled for the next working day. However, if you submit it late in the day you might have to wait an extra working day. The exact cut-off time varies by network, but it’s usually between 3pm and 5.30pm.

How do I get my PAC code?

Get your PAC code by text, online or over the phone from your current network. It’s free to get your PAC, and your network must give it to you within two days (if they can’t, they’ll need to give you a very good reason).

How to use a PAC code

Got your PAC code? Now all you need to do is contact your new network and give it to them.

How to get PAC codes from each network

We have provided contact numbers for each network to obtain your PAC code.

Vodafone PAC code

You can get a PAC code from Vodafone by dialling 191 on your Vodafone handset. Alternatively, dial 03333 040 191 from another phone (charge may apply)..

iD Mobile PAC code

If you’ve got an iD Mobile handset, dial 7777 and ask for your PAC code. If you’ve got another phone, the number you need to dial is 0333 003 7777 (charges may apply).
