Mobile network operators are companies that provide the network to your phone. Your chosen network enables you to make the most of your device – like sending and receiving calls and texts and accessing the internet when you’re out and about. There is a small core band of network providers, including Vodafone, that have the widest coverage in the country. These larger networks also support many of the smaller mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) by providing them with access to their wider network.

Luckily, there are plenty of options to pick from, so you’re spoilt for choice. We’ll walk through our top choices for mobile networks and help you pick the best phone network for you.

Vodafone

Vodafone is one of the four main network providers in the UK and their 4G network covers more than 99% of the UK population. Plus, they’re one step ahead of the game with their 5G network. So, when you opt for Vodafone, you know you’ll always be able to stream your favourite movies and podcasts, stay in touch with friends and family, and surf the web when you’re on the go.

If that sounds like what you’re looking for, find out how to change mobile networks and keep the same number, as well as make the most of the exclusive benefits - only available to Vodafone customers - that you’ll get when you opt for one of our Vodafone deals.

iD Mobile

iD Mobile is an MVNO and is powered by Three. This means when you opt for one of our iD Mobile deals, you’ll not only get great value, but you’ll also get the reliable connection that you’d expect from one of the four biggest network providers in the UK. And as an iD mobile network customer, you’ll get a wealth of features you’re sure to love. For example, iD mobile coverage gives you access to super-fast 5G, so you never have to worry about your videos, music or games lagging when you’re on the go. But it doesn’t stop there. When you opt for an iD Mobile phone contract you’ll also get Data Rollover and Roaming in 50 destinations as standard on all plans – nice.

VOXI

VOXI, powered by Vodafone, is an MVNO which gives you both superb choice and great value. Depending on which VOXI package you choose, you can enjoy special unlimited deals on calls and texts, videos and even social media. And because VOXI uses the Vodafone network, you get great 4G and 5G coverage.

Best mobile network in your area

Here at Carphone Warehouse you can find the best network (as well as the best deals) in your area. Our networks cover 99% of the UK population, so we’re sure that we have got you covered in that regard. But if you’re not sure what the best mobile network in your area is and you want to check, visit your preferred network provider’s website to use their mobile network coverage checker to see if 4G or 5G is available in your area.

How to switch mobile networks

Switching to a new network has never been easier. Back in the day, you’d have to call your current provider, who would’ve tried their best to convince you not to leave, making the whole leaving process complicated and a little awkward. But thanks to new legislation from Ofcom, it’s now simpler and faster, putting the power to switch to a new phone network with a better deal firmly in your hands.

Changing your mobile provider is as simple as sending a text, a few clicks online, or a quick phone call. The first thing you’ll need is a PAC code – this is the code that your new network needs if you want to switch and keep your existing number. To get this code, simply text PAC to 65075 and you should receive it within 60 seconds.

If you want to switch networks, take a new number and cancel your old contract, you’ll need a STAC code. Text STAC to 75075 to get your code within 60 seconds.

If you’re looking for more information on what happens when you switch mobile networks, we’ve got you covered.

Mobile network FAQs

Which is the best mobile network?

When it comes to finding the best mobile networks for you, it all depends on what you’re looking for. There are plenty of networks that offer great deals and features that you can take advantage of, but you’ll want to pay attention to coverage so you can make the most of your phone when you’re on the go. Before you opt for a network, take a look at what coverage they provide in your area.

Why is my phone saying “not registered” on my network?

If you’re seeing a “Not registered on Network” error on your mobile device, it means your SIM card can’t connect to your carrier’s network. This typically occurs on Android phones. Try turning your phone on and off (yes, it sounds simple but sometimes it really is the best solution), disable your network connection and reconnect it, or reset the network connection.
