If you’re coming to the end of your phone contract and fancy a brand-new mobile, then check out our amazing phone upgrade deals. It can be one of the most cost-effective ways of getting your hands on the latest and greatest devices. And there are loads to choose from, including top models from brands like Apple, Samsung, and Google.

Not too fussed about having the new phone everyone’s talking about? That doesn’t mean an upgrade can’t work for you. That’s because by upgrading to a cheaper (but still new and shiny) phone, you could reduce your monthly payments. And with emerging brands like OPPO and Xiaomi, there are plenty of affordable options to think about.

If you’re not quite at the end of your contract, you might still be able to get the mobile you’ve had your eye on. Some networks will let you upgrade your phone early with no incurred charge for doing so. While others may make you pay to leave the contract early.

And did you know that you don’t have to be an existing Carphone Warehouse customer to upgrade your phone with us? Whether you’re a tech head, looking to reduce your monthly phone bills, or you’re somewhere in between, go ahead and compare our best mobile phone upgrade deals today!

When can I upgrade my phone?

When you’re eligible to upgrade your phone depends on which network you’re with. You might have to wait until your contract ends. Or with some networks, you can upgrade for free anywhere from one to three months early.

If you don’t upgrade your phone and reach the end of your contract, you’ll continue on your old tariff. But because this will likely include a payment towards a handset you’ve already paid off, it’s in your best interest to act before this happens so you can save some money.

Don’t worry if you’ve forgotten when your contract is due to end though. That’s because Ofcom (the UK’s communications regulator) requires your network to share important info about your contract, which means they should let you know when it’s time to upgrade your phone.

To make your life easier, we have a handy phone upgrade checker. It takes only a few minutes to fill out and we'll tell you instantly if you can upgrade today.

Phone upgrades FAQs

What is a phone upgrade?

A phone upgrade is what happens when you reach the end of one pay-monthly mobile phone contract and you move to another with the same network. You may stay on the same plan or change to a different plan with more or less data, minutes, and texts. But often, people will choose a newer and better model of phone than they had before. Hence the term ‘upgrade’. Or you can opt for a cheaper phone to reduce your monthly bills.

How do I upgrade my phone?

Use our mobile phone upgrade checker to check if you’re eligible for an upgrade. Then choose your new handset and plan from our phone upgrade deals, and we’ll handle everything else. You’ll keep your phone number, and your old phone will still work while we make the switch. Easy!

How often should I upgrade my phone?

Most mobile phone contracts are 24 months, so you could upgrade your phone every two years. But should you? If your phone is working fine and you’re happy with it, you could move to a SIM-only contract until you need a new phone. It’s a great way to save money. But if you’re having problems with your phone, such as a battery that runs out quickly, then it’s probably time to upgrade to a new phone.

How much does it cost to upgrade my phone?

It depends on which phone and plan you choose. For example, if you choose the latest iPhone and an unlimited data plan, it’s likely that you’ll need to pay an up-front cost. While for an older or more basic model, there may be no up-front cost at all.

I’m on EE or O2, can I upgrade my phone at Carphone Warehouse?

We can no longer upgrade O2 or EE contracts as our agreement with those networks has ended. If you’re an O2 or EE customer and are looking for an upgrade (including the latest iPhone or Samsung mobiles), then we could save you money by switching you to one of our partner networks. Contact us to find out how much you could save.
