Rumours from the web

TechRadar

TechRadar is expecting big things of the new Galaxy’s camera technology: “The Galaxy S9 camera is going to be a key feature of Samsung's phone this year, and not because of a dual-lens camera or higher megapixels. Instead, we're expecting to see a variable aperture, super slow motion video and the possibility of the world's first phone with HDR video capture.

Samsung Galaxy S9 camera rumours point to a 12MP Dual Pixel lens with optical image stabilization and a variable f/1.5-2.4 aperture. That means it would be able to switch between f/1.5 (great for low light shots) and f/2.4 (ideal when the lighting is better and you want more of the photo to be in focus).”

TechRadar also has this to say about the iris scanner: “Samsung will likely improve the iris scanner ifor the Galaxy S9, with the latest rumours suggesting it will be boosted to 3MP (from 2MP on the S8) and better able to recognize your eyes, even if you wear glasses or the lighting is poor. It will also apparently be faster than on the S8.”

Pocket-lint

Like all the other major tech publications, Pocket-lint was quick to pick up on Samsung’s teaser tweet announcing its ‘Unpacked’ event: “Samsung has confirmed the 25 February as the launch date for the Galaxy S9 via a tweet. The event is a day before Mobile World Congress officially kicks off. The Unpacked event will be the official launchpad for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ smartphones, which are confirmed by a large number 9 on the otherwise minimalistic teaser. A February trade show launch for the Samsung Galaxy S9 was previously confirmed by DJ Koh, president of Samsung Mobile talking at CES 2018.”

In terms of design, Pocket-lint seems to be expecting subtle changes rather than a major overhaul: “That almost all-screen front from the S8 will remain a key design detail, along with the dual curved edges… the rear of the S9 and S9+ is expected to change, however.”

Trusted reviews

Trusted Reviews quotes a report by Korean news outlet The Bell that mentions display size: “A separate report by The Bell suggested that we’d see the same size panels on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ as we have on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The article notes that Samsung has already placed an order with suppliers for 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch edge-to-edge, curved Infinity Displays.”

There’s also some news about the processor most likely to be running Samsung’s new phone. Trusted Reviews says: “We already have a good idea about what to expect in terms of the Galaxy S9’s CPU. Samsung phones typically ship with two different chips, either of which will be selected for a certain market region where the phone will be on sale. You’ll either get a Samsung-built Exynos chipset, or a Qualcomm-designed Snapdragon chipset. The Snapdragon 845 chip has already been confirmed by Qualcomm, and will once again be manufactured by Samsung’s chip-making division.”
