Design & display

A striking resemblance

The new design of the Samsung Galaxy A3 strongly mirrors current flagship, the Galaxy S7. The only differences being it’s new Type-C charging port, the side-mounted speaker grill and its slightly smaller camera lens.

Impressive display

Enjoy high definition photos, films and games with the Galaxy A3’s 4.7-inch display. The Gorilla Glass-protected screen features Samsung’s trademark Super AMOLED technology too, to make sure everything stands out.

Camera

13MP rear camera

The A3 (2017)’s 13MP camera is packed with great features to make sure your photos look great. And it can be launched with a quick double tap of the home button, to capture all those fleeting moments.

Selfie cam

On the front of the smartphone is a powerful 8MP sensor for selfies and video calls. Simply swipe up on the camera screen and the phone will switch the cameras for quicker shots.

Under the hood

Big on power

A powerful 1.6GHz octa-core processor is built into the A3 (2017) to make sure you’re not slowed down by even the most demanding games and movies. If that’s not enough, the processor is backed up by 2GB RAM.

Go longer between charges

Despite the A3’s small size, it doesn’t compromise on battery capacity. There’s a 2,350mAh cell on board, and with the new Type-C USB technology, you’ll be able to charge up quicker than ever.

Samsung Galaxy A3 2017 is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Revs from Fast processor Firstly, the main reason I am keeping this phone is the fast processor. Even Skype which is a painful app/SW (even on my Windows laptop) starts almost immediately and both online & offline apps work quite fast and efficiently. Secondly - the battery life is GREAT and so is the fast charging. I am charging my phone every other day and I use Skype a lot (and a bit of Youtube). Charging really is fast. All other issues notwithstanding I will change this rating to 5 stars for battery performance alone if it continues like this for next couple of months. I also like the camera and the ease of switching from front to rear and vice versa. Audio quality is adequate. I know video could have been better but the speed pretty much makes up for everything else. Camera is much better than previous models and I like the way 'Notes' works now. It's neater and quicker to access different notes. Aesthetically more pleasing too. There is also the option of viewing all pages/apps at once on the screen. That makes moving between apps possible/faster and again the processor speed is a huge blessing for smooth and swift functionality. I would have thought the previous black background would have saved more energy and the white background (for all options) is not pleasing either. Overall the menus etc looked far more compact on my older S3. And things were far more accessible and comprehensible as well. So, like many other reviewers I will also say that the phone is not easy to use. However, much though I hate the way many things look on this phone there are several minor but important changes to almost all options so that things are a bit easier and we have more choice. Despite several similarities with older models the phone is difficult to use partly because many of Samsung's default Apps are missing. There are no widgets and even the 'My files' option is not to be found easily (I've not tried very hard so not sure if it's even to be found at all!) Most things including the music player, the earlier dual clock, etc. have to be downloaded. These downloads come with the ominous 'contains Ads'. Which means that every time I want to see what the time is in another country I have to put up with ads running at the bottom of the screen. Distracting and annoying. Samsung could have retained many of its apps and made our life easier. Available downloads are also often much worse in quality and looks than what models like S3/S4 (including the mini versions) had. Lastly, given how flimsy the backs of Samsung phones have usually been (e.g. compared to even the budget Nokia phones) perhaps it was wiser for them to switch to the new needle-&-tray approach to inserting/removing SIM & micro SD cards. [However, it does mean that battery replacement is no longer an option.] So, overall the price is perhaps okay but I hate the missing apps and the additional time and effort required to set up my phone and get going. And I wish more effort had been invested in making options on the screen look more compact. Still I will settle for the current unaesthetic look given the speed of launching apps etc. but I do want the tonnes of default apps (and the same or better quality) back Samsung!

Rated 1 out of 5 by london from Not great phone and even worse service Bought phone a month ago, only started using it a week ago. Used to have S4. New phone different charger so not compatible. Sim card also needs a needle pin to take out?! What a inconvenience. Even worse is the fact the Samsung battery cannot be taken out, so when your phone freezes it is a nightmare as no buttons work for hours. Samsung needs to stop replicating Apple features that are not good. And if you go to geek squad, the technician is on holiday for 2 weeks and store doesn't even hire a replacement! And to top it all off, insurance with geek squad is half the price of the contract! Do NOT recommend. Would be better off with S4 or S5.
