SIMs (Subscriber Identity Modules) are hugely important to the identity and function of your mobile phone. They hold data that is specific to the user, and enable your phone to connect to the network and data plan that you have subscribed to. With a dual SIM phone, powered by two separate SIM cards, you have the flexibility to enjoy two SIMS in one mobile. That way you can make the most of different phone contracts, or have two separate numbers: one for work or business, and one for your personal and family life.
A dual SIM also means you can have one SIM that connects you to a local network when travelling abroad, with the standard SIM from your home country ready to kick into action when you return. Put simply, a dual SIM gives you even more options when it comes to making the most of your mobile phone.
You can even give yourself full autonomy when it comes to choosing both of your SIM card providers. SIM free phones with a dual SIM set-up enable you to simply buy a handset on its own, and then choose your compatible SIMs afterwards.
Or, if you already have a dual SIM phone but want to switch one or both of your SIMs, you can do so by taking advantage of a SIM only deal. That way, you only pay for your SIM card and associated contract, without having to fork out for a new mobile.
If you’re an iPhone aficionado on the lookout for dual SIM iPhones, then you’ll be pleased to know that they’re out there. Both the iPhone 14 Pro Max dual SIM mobile and iPhone 13 Pro Max dual SIM and their regular-sized counterparts, the iPhone 14 Pro and 13 Pro have dual SIM functionality. That extends across the family too, meaning there’s also a dual SIM iPhone 13 and dual SIM iPhone 14 available if that’s what you fancy.
There are a number of Samsung dual SIM options to take advantage of, if the Galaxy coupled with the Android operating system is what you’re after. For starters, if you’re wondering is the S23 Ultra dual SIM, then you’re in luck. This high-performance handset with 200MP camera and 6.8 inch display is just one of a number of Samsung dual SIM phones available.
Google Pixel phones tend to come in a little less expensive than their Apple or Samsung counterparts, but still pack a punch when it comes to functionality, tech specs and usability. So it’s no surprise that Google Pixel dual SIM phones are available including the Pixel 7 dual SIM. The slightly smaller Pixel 6a has dual SIM, and there’s a Google Pixel 7 Pro dual SIM option too.
Aside from Samsung and Google Pixel, there are even more ways to enjoy the flexibility of a dual SIM Android phone. The Edge 40 is a great Motorola dual SIM phone, packed with terrific features including the Android 13 operation system, a 50MP wide lens camera and Dolby Atmos sound. Dual SIM phones utilise two separate SIM cards to give the handset the ability to change between service providers. It means that your phone can have two numbers that you can call from, and which people can reach you with. This is really handy if you want to have a personal number and a business number that operate separately from one another, for instance.
In some cases, one of the SIMs is already embedded into the phone (an eSIM) and works like a traditional SIM card to connect you to your chosen service provider and data package. The second SIM is usually a physical card that is inserted into a tray on your mobile phone. Usually, with a dual SIM set-up, when one SIM is in use, the other stays in standby mode, ready to be activated when called upon.
Dual SIM phones operate differently according to the model and operating system of the handset. How you manage them depends entirely on how the phone is built – for instance one SIM may need to be inserted by hand into a retractable tray on the side of your phone, while the other (usually an eSIM) can only accessed via menus on the operating system.
Here are a couple of examples:
To set up dual SIM on iPhone, follow these four steps:
1. Go to Settings on your iPhone, then select Cellular. Make sure you have two lines available, which will be the case if you have two SIMs.
2. To turn on your two lines, select a line by tapping on it. Now tap Turn On this Line.
3. Select your default line for cellular data by selecting Cellular Data and then tapping the line you want to use. If you want to use either line depending on data coverage and availability at any particular time, select Allow Cellular Data Switching.
4. Select your default line for voice calls by selecting Default Voice Line and then tapping the line you want to use.

To set up your Samsung dual SIM phone, follow these steps:
1. Go to Settings on your Samsung phone, then select Connections.
2. Select SIM card manager from the menu.
3. From the list, select the SIM card you want to activate.
4. To enable the SIM card, tap the switch.
5. You can give each SIM card a name so that you know which is which. To do this, tap Name and then follow the instructions.
