Design and display

Seeing the big picture

The 6-inch display dominates the face of the smartphone, leaving just two slim bezels at the top and bottom. The OLED screen is 18:9 ratio, instead of the more conventional 16:9 ratio, giving you a larger picture, without a larger smartphone. At Quad HD resolution, everything looks pin-sharp, and the HDR10 inclusion tunes up all the colours too.

Slim and strong

The V30 features a subtle curve on the rear, and measures just 7.4mm in thickness. It feels really comfortable to hold, and it’s really strong, too - protected against water and dust, to a depth of 1.5 meters with IP68 certification.

Camera

More light for better shots

The dual lens rear camera has a super-wide aperture of f/1.6. This means that LG’s Crystal Clear lens can open really wide to suck in loads of light, for brighter more true-to-life colours.

When using the camera’s Cine Video mode, you can take advantage of one of LG’s most exciting new features, called Point Zoom. As well as the impressive optical image stabilisation (OIS), you can smoothly pan into any point on the screen by giving it a quick tap. This adds a professional-looking element to your videos, and gives you more creative control.

Hi-Fi audio video recording

With thanks to the B&O Play integration, you can record superior sound in your videos. You only record the bits you want – so, if you’re at a gig, and you want to dampen the audience noise, just set the directional receiver to the act and come home with a balanced and accurate recording.

Under the hood

Bags of power

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor is running the show, backed up by 4GB RAM. You’ll never be slowed down when using your favourite apps, and with all that power, you’re all set up to use Google’s Daydream View VR headset. Simply download the app from the Google Play Store, and then slot the V30 into the headset for immersive virtual reality experiences.

Giant battery

The 3,300mAh battery cell will comfortably see you through the whole day. And you’ll be able to power up 50% in just 36 minutes using the latest in charging technology, USB Type-C. Alternatively, you go wirelessly by placing the phone on top of a charging mat, and forget about leads and cables all together.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great phone, until it just stopped working... I got a V30 on contract in April 2018 and I was delighted. Really impressed with everything about the phone. It seemed like a real step-up. Then, in September it just stopped working while on charge. It was well looked after and never damaged. After spending a morning going through the fixes for what seems to be a known issue, I gave up and went back to my old G5, which still works great. Bottom line: All my ratings would be a lot higher if I wasn't going through the Carphone Warehouse/LG Warranty process. When they fix it, I still won't trust it. I will stay with my old G5. On that basis I cannot recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An outstanding phone I bought the LG V30 about 5 months ago, to replace my G3. It represents a quantum leap forward in quality, particularly of the camera, which was a major point for me. The G3 already had a good camera at the time of it came out, but the V30 offers many extra options. The superwide angle lens is incredible: just zoom out and it changes seamlessly from the standard lens, and offers a distortion-free panoramic vision.Low-light ability is quite remarkable too. Zoom back in & it changes back to the standard lens. Tap the screen and an exposure compensation slider pops up. Brilliant! The camera offers various proportions: 4:3, 16:9, and 18:9, and in two different resolutions for each. Some strange things have been written about the screen of the V30; it is quite simply superb - about the highest resolution of any phone available, and with excellent rich colour. The colour can be adjusted to suit your particular use. The screen's surface does not seem to attract grease in the way that older phones did either - rather useful! And most of the phone is its screen. The battery life is exceptional, if you set it to battery saver mode; I get 2 days' use easily. The only downside is that the clock is no longer visible when "asleep", but I have the phone in a protective case anyway, so don't miss this! About as good a phone as you can buy. I don't understand why LG don't get more credit for their phones, and why they are not more readily available...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great phone, when it works When it works, it's great. Fab screen, great sound with the Quad DAC, fast and easy to use, and the landscape camera is almost unique. It takes great pictures for a phone. But i've never had an LG phone that hasn't needed to be replaced, and LGs customer service is beyond awful. You buy an LG phone for the excellent features, in the hope it won't break so you dont have to deal with LG.... see below I purchased my first LG V30 with B&O headphones in early December, and it quickly developed groups of dead pixels all over the screen. To be fair to CPW, they did replace it overnight due to their Christmas exchange policy, but only after two different stores gave different advice. A couple of months later, the B&O headphones stopped working properly. The volume and bass in the right earbud was down compared to the left (I checked the phone settings, and accessibility settings etc. it was definitely the headphones). LG initially said it wasnt their problem, and I needed to contact B&O. B&O replied to say LG had a contract to fix these headphones, so I had to tell LG about their own contract... after this, I sent the headphones to LG who took 2 weeks to test them, and said they worked fine, in a typed return note with badly spelled English. I replied back to say that the headphones were still broken. LG then said then wanted to take the headphones and the V30 to test them for "compatibility issues". Bearing in mind they bundled the headphones with the V30 package, and the headphones worked fine on the first V30 and the second for a period. Also the headphones had the same error on laptops, ipads, other phones etc. Other headphones worked fine on both phones and other devices too... They'd also need the phone and the headphones for another 2 weeks.... I gave up after this and purchased a pair of headphones myself. but after spending hundreds on a phone because it has a quad DAC and was being bundled with good headphones, it seemed like a waste of money and time. i'll purchase my next phone from a different manufacturer for sure.
