For most of us, our phones are a huge part of our lives, and running out of battery at the wrong time can be inconvenient, to say the least. So, whether you’ve managed to lose your charger (again!), your old one has died, or you’d just like another for your home, we’ve got what you need to keep your phone charged.
There are quite a few different phone cable types - like micro-USB, USB-C and lightning cables. If you don’t know which phone cable you need, it’s a good idea to take a look at the product spec for your phone before you buy. iPhones are pretty straightforward - if you have an Apple device it’s likely you’ll need one of their lightning cables. With other phone brands it can be a little more complicated. The plug part of a phone charger - also known as the power adapter - is usually sold separately and needs to be compatible with the charging cable.

All generations of iPhone from iPhone 5 onwards use Apple’s lightning cable to charge, so if you’re an iPhone user, it’s likely that this is the cable for you. The question is, what are you plugging it into? Both USB to lightning and USB-C to lightning cables are available, so if you’re using an existing power adapter or plugging into a computer, check which connection you need.
If you’re in the market for a new charger for your Samsung phone, you’ll need to know which type of charging cable your phone uses. All newer Samsung phones have a USB-C connection and most older models have a micro-USB connection. If you’re not sure which one your phone has, you can check in ‘About Phone’ in the phone’s settings.

Wireless phone chargers are becoming increasingly popular, with most new phones supporting the technology. Many people find wireless chargers a convenient alternative to wired charging.

Fast charging is available with most handsets and charges your battery to 50% in about 30 minutes or less, depending on the handset. That’s 70% faster than standard 5w charging. To achieve this speed, you’ll need a fast charging-compatible handset, a charger that’s over 18w, and either a USB-C to Lightning or USB-C to USB-C cable. A charger isn’t included in the box with all Apple and most Samsung handsets, so make sure you pick one up when you buy your phone.
A wireless phone charger charges using electromagnetic induction. The charging base has an electromagnetic coil which transmits energy. A smaller electromagnetic coil in your phone receives that energy and transfers it into the phone’s battery.
Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) is the global standard for wireless phone charging and is used by most mobile phones including Apple iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel and Nokia.
Charging your phone using a wireless charger couldn’t be easier. Simply plug the charger into a power outlet and place it on a flat surface, then place your phone on the charger face up. The phone should start to charge after a few seconds, if it doesn’t, try repositioning your phone on the charger.
Charging should work through most phone cases but if you have a metal case or a thick leather case, for example, you may need to remove it to charge your phone.
There’s a myth that using a wireless charger will damage your phone battery and make it degrade quicker than if you use a wired charger. This is not true. Wireless charging does produce slightly more heat than wired charging, but it is managed to ensure it doesn’t cause a problem. In order to gain industry-standard Qi certification, a wireless charger must regulate heat by reducing charging speed if excess heat is being generated.
A MagSafe charger is Apple’s magnetic wireless charger. The iPhone 12 and all later models have a ring of magnets built underneath their induction coil, allowing them to magnetically attach to a range of accessories, including MagSafe wireless chargers. These chargers snap together with compatible iPhones, perfectly aligning the charging coils to provide faster and more efficient charging.
MagSafe wireless charging technology is Qi-certified, so compatible iPhones can still be charged using a regular Qi charger. And vice versa, any phone that’s capable of wireless charging can be charged using a MagSafe charger, but they won’t magnetically align.
