Calling to and from abroad

If you're not an O2 customer who gets their bill from Carphone Warehouse, please contact your network for more information.

What is roaming?

Using your mobile to call to or from a country outside the UK is called roaming.

How do I get roaming?
Give us a call on 0870 111 7200 to have roaming activated. Activation is subject to status and you may be asked for a security deposit.

  • Full roaming lets you make and receive calls and texts from the UK to any country your network has agreements with. You can also make and receive calls when you are abroad.
  • Limited roaming allows you to receive calls when you are abroad and to then make calls back to the UK. You can also make calls to landlines or mobiles in the country you are visiting.

I’m going away – what do I need to do?

What do I need to do before I go abroad?
Give us a call on 0870 111 7200 and we’ll set up your account so you’re ready to go. When you call we may:
  • Set up roaming on your account so your phone will work when you’re abroad.
  • Raise your credit limit so you’re not cut off – please do not use this limit to budget. The call data we get from foreign networks is often delayed so it’s possible to run up a bill higher than your credit limit.
  • Ask if you'd like to add a Bolt On to your account to save money on your calls when you're away.

When you are abroad

  • Your phone will usually pick up the foreign network immediately. If it doesn’t you may need to search for it yourself – you can usually do this by selecting Settings > Networks on your handset. Check your phone’s user manual for more details.
  • You’ll be charged for receiving calls.
  • Making and receiving international calls can be expensive – please monitor the calls you make carefully and don’t use your call limit to budget.
  • You will be charged for listening to voicemail messages.

When you get back

  • If you diverted all calls to go straight to voicemail, dial##21# from your mobile to turn this off.
  • We’ll add your international call charges to your bill as soon as we get them from the foreign network. This can take up to six weeks so your next bill may not include all these charges.
  • Different countries charge for calls in different increments - some by the second and some by the minute.

How much do international calls cost?

Visit the O2 website to find out how much it costs to call to or from abroad.
O2 customers can add a range of Bolt Ons to their account to get better value international calls to or from the UK. Please call us on 0870 111 7200 to find out more.

Internet and download charges when you're abroad

Before you leave the UK it's important to check whether your phone is set up to automatically download data from the internet. This is because you'll be charged for any downloads that are made when you're away, even if you haven't actively chosen to surf the web.

Costs for these services can be high and you should check with your network before you travel.

Your phone may be set up to download data automatically if you use:
  • An email client that sends new emails directly to your phone.
  • Any other web-based application. E.g. Facebook updates

To avoid being charged for downloads when you're away:

  • Call your service provider and ask them to remove your data services.
Or, uninstall any web applications from your handset.
