Timeshift burst on the Sony Xperia™ Z1

Posted on 5 September 2013

What does it do?

There are a few burst shot modes on phones but nothing as crazy fast as the Timeshift Burst mode of the Sony Xperia™ Z1. When in Timeshift mode, the Z1's camera will take 61 photos in just two seconds. 30 shots are taken from the second before you press the shutter button and 30 are taken the second after, with one being captured at the exact moment you hit the button. This means even if you just missed the shot you were after, you can wind back your photos to find the perfect moment.

What is it for?

No one likes to miss a perfect photo, and that's what the Timeshift burst feature will prevent. Because it takes so many photos so quickly, and lets you wind back to before you actually pressed the button to take a shot, you can really pinpoint the moment you wanted. Maybe you were watching football and wanted to get the exact moment the ball hit the net. Impossible with a normal camera, but the Z1's software makes that easy. Perhaps you're on a night out and no one can stand still for longer than a split second. No problem. The huge sensor on the Z1's camera is perfect for dark nightclubs. And by using Timeshift burst, you'll get a selection of shots so at least one will be fine for social networking! In short, if you want a shot of something moving fast, the best way to get a fantastic photo is to load up Timeshift burst mode.

How does it work?

Open up the camera app, either by long pressing the camera button or accessing it from the apps menu, and press the silver button in the corner of the screen. Select Timeshift burst and you're ready to take some super-fast photos. Press the camera button and your shots are taken. The photos you took are then spread out in a fan. The centre photo is taken from the exact instant you pressed the shutter button. To the left are the shots before you took a photo, and to the right the ones after. Slide your finger across the fan to check them all out and when you've found your favourite, click the green tick.

You can also go back and look at the other photos that were taken in the burst. So, if you change your mind, it's easy to choose a new favourite. Access your photos from the Album app. Select the burst photos you want to scroll through, and then press the clock icon at the bottom of the screen. The Z1 will load up all 61photos, and you just need to press the green tick on your new favourite.
