Popular mobile phone manufacturer Samsung is to release its first mobile handset running on Google's Android operating system.

The South Korean company revealed that it is working on a device which will capitalise on all of Android's best features and contain a variety of usability qualities like a touchscreen - a feature that is becoming more and more common thanks to its worldwide acclaim on the Apple iPhone.

In a statement, Samsung said: "We are accelerating the development process for Google phone in order to meet the specific need of local carriers". Samsung is planning on working with network providers T-Mobile and Sprint for the upcoming device. T-Mobile has already got one Android phone under its belt - currently the first and only device running the operating system. HTC's G1 handset was released in Q4 last year and saw a surge of sales, having now sold over 1 million handsets.

The Android operating system means that devices running it will all use Google applications as part of the basic package. Phones will come toting Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail and Google Talk amongst other well-known offerings by the Mountain View giant. Although no release date has been unveiled, Samsung is likely to set loose its addition to the upcoming Android family over coming months.

Already, other mobile phone manufacturers have stated their intentions to build phones running Android, so the competition will be strong. Motorola and industry favourite, Nokia, are amongst the rival manufacturers planning an Android device in their 2009 line-up.
