Top global mobile maker Nokia has responded to a recently-flagged malicious style of SMS - wherein the receiver of such a text, on opening it, will find their phone no longer able to receive further text or picture messages.

Although Nokia has not yet received any reports from actual customers receiving the message, the Finnish giant is taking the issue very seriously and working to eradicate any future instances of such an attack. Originally, the company recommended that customers only open messages originating from known and trusted numbers, but Nokia has now stepped up its response, and have gotten in touch with network operators. Nokia asked network operators to block or filter the malicious messages in hopes that this would prevent any from arriving at their target.

Already T-Mobile has revealed its co-operation, but Nokia has not released what other network providers it is contacting. The "Curse of Silence" is a vulnerability affecting Symbian phones - devices running Nokia's own operating system. The models that can be attacked are versions of Nokia's S60 line - the 2.6, 2.8, 3.0 and 3.1. The firm has stated that it does not believe the malware is a serious risk to customers, but it has also vowed to take the claim seriously.

Nokia is working with Symbian to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. It is possible that the mobile phone manufacturer could attempt to do so by creating a firmware update which would go to all vulnerable phones.
