Nexus S from Google - 60 minute review

The Nexus S from Google is the world's first Android 2.3 smartphone, with the latest in hardware, software, and an incredible 4inch Super AMOLED display. We took Nexus S for a test drive to see just why Techcrunch are calling it "the best phone on the market".

1 min. Nexus S is a curvy phone that feels great to hold. From the side you can see where the screen gently dips in the middle.

We turned on the Super AMOLED display and it's just stunning. It's up to 1.5 times more luminous than a traditional LCD display, with deeper blacks, brighter whites and no reflection, even in direct sunlight!

3 mins. The Android 2.3 interface has a black notifications bar that actually saves you battery, and a whizzy, colourful background that reminds you of the 80's. In a good way. You can fill the 5 homescreens with your favourite apps, like on any Android phone.

6 mins. The new shortcuts bar at the bottom of the touchscreen makes it easier to find things - you can open your contacts book, apps menu or web browser with one tap.

7 mins. Pressing the grid button takes you to your apps screen, which scrolls like the writing at the beginning of a Star Wars movie. It adds to the excellent 80's techy feel.

10 mins. Speaking of apps, there are some new ones on the Nexus S. Notably the Tags app, which uses Near Field Communication technology (NFC) to save online information to your phone, so that you can access it quickly again later.

13 mins. Websites load really quickly in the browser. Naturally Google Search is built in and you get flash support for rich content and videos. You won't have to pan and pinch your way around pages, as they are automatically resized to fit the screen.

17 mins. The native YouTube app has been designed by Google to work well with your smartphone. It shows you a list of popular videos, and there's an instant search box that predicts what you're searching for as you type.

25 mins. Nexus S has a really powerful and accurate compass and an Assisted GPS unit, as well as Google Maps 5, which lets you view 3D vector buildings and get traffic reports. It found our location in under a second. Places is already built in, so you can easily find somewhere to eat out, meet up or catch a movie.

31 mins. The Nexus S has a speedy 1GHz Hummingbird processor and a dedicated Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), for an exceptional gaming, video streaming and HD movie watching experience

Downloaded Angry Birds from Android Market in less than a minute and loaded up in seconds. There's no lag at all in the gameplay, and the action is fast and fluid

40 mins. Time to see how the Nexus S performs as a phone. The tabbed contacts book is really easy to use - you can quickly move from the dialling pad to the call log, your contacts list and contacts, and then back again.

43 mins. Did you know that the Nexus S has Google's noise cancellation technology built-in for clearer phone calls? The connection is impressively clear and crisp.

47 mins. Messaging is easy, thanks to the multitouch onscreen keyboard. The keys are large and evenly spaced, and there's only one screen instead of three. You just hold your finger down to switch from letter to number, or slide it across the pad to select a symbol. Texting is really quick and simple.

50 mins. Android 2.3 gives you a dedicated downloads folder, in your apps menu, so you can quickly find your music, videos, apps, games and eBooks.

55 mins. When you activate the new car panel app it pushes your phone into a special mode designed for use while driving. In car mode you can easily access Google Maps navigation, your music, contacts, phone dialler or start a voice search. Handy when you're looking for the nearest petrol station on a long trip!

58 mins. Just snapped an impressive 5 Megapixel picture with the speedy autofocus lens. There's a front facing camera too, for video calls over 3G or Wi-Fi.

60 mins. Shared my photo over Facebook and Twitter in just a couple of taps.

Verdict:

With its stunning 4 inch screen, powerful processor and next gen software, the Nexus S from Google is easily one of the most impressive smartphones yet.
