Who needs touchscreens when you can talk to your phone?

Posted on 15 January 2014

Motorola's Moto X is coming to the UK in January 2014 and with it comes a step up in voice control for your smartphone. But what's so new and special about Google Now on Moto X and is it really better than Apple's Siri and Samsung's S Voice?

What's new about the voice controls on Moto X?

With Moto X you can use your phone even when you don’t have a free hand to reach it. So whether you’re driving, cooking or playing with the kids, you can still make phone calls, play music and generally use your phone just by talking to it.

This is so revolutionary because you don’t even need to unlock the Moto X to get it to listen to you. A clever low power processor is tasked with the job of keeping the voice recognition on at all times so it’s ready when you are. That means you just need to say “OK Google Now” and it’ll be ready to obey your commands.

Moto X Voice control

Is it better than other voice control systems on phones?

The fact that the Moto X can be truly hands free is a big advantage. But it doesn’t stop there; Moto X reliably recognises your voice and reacts accurately and quickly. Its reliability comes from the way you set it up. You say the phrase “OK Google Now” three times in a quiet room so the phone learns your voice. Then, when you’re somewhere noisy, it can filter out everything apart from you to improve accuracy.

It also feels much faster than either S Voice or Siri when it’s answering you, thanks to that dedicated low power processor. And that speed’s amplified by not needing to pick up the phone in the first place.

In terms of the responses you get, there’s nothing to choose between the three big players. On a Moto X, iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy S4 what you say gets the same answers. Unless you ask one of the questions that have funny answers, like how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood. When it comes to these comical questions, Siri answers best, saying “None, as a woodchuck is actually a groundhog.”

So the Motorola Moto X has the best voice controls on the market right now. The fact that you can use it without touching it and its impressive speed set it above the rest.
