Tech media have been alive with rumours over the past few months on the suspected release date for Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. Key Lime Pie was widely expected to be announced at Google's Developers Confers, Google I/O, in May and has now been tipped by tech website Trusted Reviews to be released in October alongside an unconfirmed Google Nexus 5 handset.
Tech Radar agrees that the October release date is the most logical as it looks likely to time with the release of new Android handsets such as the rumoured Motorola X Phone and Nexus 5. October also marks the 5th anniversary of Android, and according to The Inquirer, launching Key Lime Pie in October would make perfect sense for Google. The Inquirer has also heard rumours that Google will first release an Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update in late August ahead of the Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie launch, which will have support for low-energy Bluetooth connectivity and Open GL 3D graphics.
At the moment nobody knows what features to expect from the next Android update but Know Your Mobile has suggested the introduction of profiles. For example, at night a smartphones doesn't need to synch emails or fetch data from Twitter and it's rumoured that Key Lime Pie will allow users to enable a profile which prevents these unnecessary tasks and conserves battery life.
PhoneArena suggests that as many manufacturers are still playing catch up to get Android 4.2.2 working on their devices, Key Lime Pie might be tweaked so that it can run on older models too. Google itself has yet to confirm the date when Key Lime Pie will be introduced or what Android users can expect to see from the updated operating system.
Here at Carphone Warehouse, we're looking forward to the official announcement from Android on the Key Lime Pie release date and features. The rumour that Key Lime Pie can run on older handsets is great news for consumers and should hopefully give those with older handsets the chance to be up to date on the latest smartphone innovations without having to buy a brand new smartphone.
