PC manufacturer Dell has long been the subject of whispered rumours - speculating that the Texas-based company may branch into the mobile phone industry.

However, the word on the street is sizzling once more. According to industry blog engadget, Dell may be launching its inaugural handset as soon as next month at the World Mobile Congress or 3GSM. These rumours may normally have been quashed if it hadn't been for the enthusiasm Dell employees had shown for Google's Android and Nokia's S60 operating systems at the company's Adamo press event last week.

Many Dell employees toted HTC's G1 device - the first handset ever to come installed with Google's Android operating system. According to engadget, Dell's director of consumer electronics also carried a Nokia E71 and enthused about its superior design compared with other handsets. What's more, Dell also recently hired a former company executive from Motorola, further fuelling rumours of a smartphone.

After Dell's Adamo event, where the PC and laptop manufacturer spoke of its talent in the industry and innovative hardware designs, it seems only logical to assume that it may follow in the same footsteps as software designers Microsoft and Google. Microsoft's Windows Mobile is one of the most popular operating systems available, with a vast number of releases, new and old, toting the software.

Google's first venture into the smartphone market was heralded with excitement and anticipation over Andriod's first release onto the HTC phone. Of course, there's also Apple, whose iPhone utilises both Apple software and hardware.

The current trend has seen many companies switch from PC to mobile - so it could well be the case that Dell will follow.
