Korean electronics giant LG Electronics has announced plans to release a handset inspired by a popular Nintendo game in the Korean market.

The new touchscreen device will be modelled on the game 'Cooking Mama' and the LG-KP500 device has been given the moniker "Cookie". According to industry new site Telcomes Korea, the KP500 is the first handset to support Nintendo games - and the new handset is inspired by a game about cooking.

Cooking Mama allows players to simulate preparing a variety of dishes onscreen by touching, tilting or shaking the screen. The game has previously been available for the Nintendo DS and Wii system and is one of the DS's best selling games with more than a million copies sold worldwide. However, last month Cooking Mama also appeared in the App store aimed at users of the Apple iPhone and iTouch.

As gaming on mobile devices become ever more popular and smartphone capacities continue increasing, many of the world's top mobile companies have made plans to try and capture the gaming market. LG, along with rival Korean mobile developers Samsung, once attempted a foray into the console gaming market but were forced from the market by Japanese rivals.

A successful partnership with Nintendo could give LG a much needed edge in the global market. The new device will join other new innovative offerings from the mobile firm, such as the recently revealed wristwatch phone and the KM900 - which boasts an impressive spec list including an intuitive touchscreen.
