South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung looks set to release a new touch screen model this quarter. The handset, dubbed the Samsung Memoir, will be released in the US initially and will be available exclusively on T-Mobile.

Its primary feature will be an eight megapixel camera with Xenon flash, 16x digital zoom, five shooting modes and the ability to share images directly with any online photo site. In addition, its touch screen will sport a user-friendly TouchWiz interface, with a visual QWERTY keyboard.

Other features include multiple audio and video-format support (including MP3 and MPEG 4) and Advanced Voice Recognition, which means that many of the mobile phone's applications can be opened and managed by simple voice commands. Standard tools, like messaging, e-mail, a digital music player and personal organiser will be incorporated too.

A USB port and Bluetooth capability are also included, but rumours suggest that 3G compatibility may have been omitted. Tech news site CNET reports that T-Mobile has pulled off a coup by securing the Samsung Memoir, as it now holds a monopoly on many major high-end camera phones in the market, such as the five megapixel Motorola ZN5.

The model's touch screen capability is also sure to win it fans, as touch screen phones become increasingly popular in the wake of the success of the Apple iPhone. Finnish mobile leaders Nokia have also just entered this market, with the launch of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic handset, its first touch screen model.

No UK release date has been officially announced, but experts predict that it will follow the US release by a matter of weeks.
