The Effective monthly cost helps you to compare the total amount you'll pay for different deals, including those with an upfront cost, cashback, or bill credits, helping you find the best value deal.
The Effective monthly cost is NOT the amount that will be taken from your bank account by direct debit every month (this is the “Monthly cost”).
Included in the Effective monthly cost figure is:
For example. A contract has an upfront handset cost of £50. The contract is 24 months long, and is £25 per month. This means the total line rental is 24 months x £25, which is £600. If there was £100 cashback, this would be taken into account too, by subtracting it from the total line rental cost. £600-£100 = £500. Add in the handset cost £50+£500 =£550 to give the total contract cost of £550. To get the Effective monthly cost, divide this by the contract length: £550/24 months, to give £22.92.
*Networks may increase Monthly price in line with Retail Price Index (RPI).

For the movie lovers and security conscious, the HTC One max has a huge, clear 5.9” screen and an inventive fingerprint scanner. And the impressive new features are all wrapped in the award winning design of the HTC One, so it looks good too.
Under the removable metal back is a big 3,300mAh battery that gives the HTC One max 585 hours of standby time, up to 25 hours of making phone calls. It’s powered by a 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600 quad core processor and Android Jelly Bean 4.3. The 4.7” screen has a full HD resolution of 1080p giving it a sharp pixel density of 373 pixels per inch (PPI). There’s a 4MP camera, but it has one of the largest light sensors to give it excellent performance and sharpness, especially in low light situations. For storage, there’s 16GB of built-in memory and a microSD slot.
HTC has got creative with the One max. On the back of the phone there’s a square fingerprint scanner that not only gives you extra security but launches different apps depending on which finger you swipe over it. You can get the One max to record up to three fingerprints and assign a different app to each, from the camera to the weather. It means you could set the phone up to work with your kid’s finger but only let them unlock the phone into Kid Mode.
Once you’ve securely unlocked your new HTC One max, you’ll be faced with its awesome 5.9” full HD screen. Its high resolution means everything looks super sharp while the colours and contrast have been set brilliantly to show fine details realistically. All this adds up to a screen that’s perfect for watching movies, playing games or reading. It gives a visual experience that’s rarely rivalled in the mobile world.
The screen may be bigger on the HTC One max but the phone has stuck to the hugely successful design template of the HTC One. That means it’s still made from aluminium and keeps the stereo speakers on the front of the phone. The sleek, award winning design has been tweaked to make room for some extra features though. The black fingerprint scanner looks neat under the camera, while the removable back cover still looks and feels smooth but means you can add a microSD card for even more storage.
Powering the HTC One max is the great software from Google and HTC, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and Sense 5.5. The software manages the power from the 1.7GHz quad core processor excellently so everything feels quick and smooth. HTC BlinkFeed can now pull up even more information too. All your social networks, including Instagram, Twitter and Flickr, are on BlinkFeed and even apps such as TV can share info with it so everything you could want to know is on one page.
