Nokia could unveil a new phone on 2nd April

March 26, 2014

Just as HTC started its event last night, Nokia jumped onto Twitter to announce that it’ll be hosting an event on 2nd April.

And it looks like we could be seeing more than one new device, as Nokia’s tweet said “Why have one when you can have more?” a shot at HTC’s new One (M8).

But there were some surprises. An Extreme Power Saving mode is said to make the battery last two weeks on a single charge and a partnership with FitBit means the One (M8) can track your fitness.

It’s possible that we’ll see the rumoured Lumia 930 running on the new Windows Phone 8.1.

Nokia patents a symbol recognition engine

March 18, 2014

Nokia’s new patent has an unusual name but a pretty cool use. The symbol recognition engine would let you write an action on the screen with your finger, like ‘call mum’, and the phone would do it.

Looking deeper into the patent shows that Nokia wants you to be able to create short symbols and assign specific actions to them. So drawing a circle on the screen could launch Angry Birds.

We’ll have to wait and see if Microsoft uses this cool feature in any of its upcoming smartphones.

Microsoft's Cortana voice assistant leaks in video

March 05, 2014

A video of Microsoft’s rival to Siri and Google Now , called Cortana, has leaked online, showing its initial setup and some of its features.

Apparently Cortana will ask what you want to be called before going through a few questions to get to know you. From these questions it seems that Cortana will have a lot of Google Now functions, like pulling up information it thinks is relevant to you without you asking for it.

It’s thought that Cortana will launch on Windows Phone 8.1, which could arrive at the Microsoft Build Conference in April.

More shots of the Nokia X

Feb 21, 2014

The Nokia X is an unusual phone because, if rumours are true, it will run on Android, not Windows Phone. There have been a number of leaks of the device, and the latest shots show some more details of the software.

It looks like the live tiles will be able to be resized, much like the tiles in Windows Phone. There also seems to be a folder option. Either way, the look of the screens should make the X a unique phone.

The top hand corner of the screenshot shows two SIM card icons, suggesting there might be a dual SIM card version too.

Nokia goes green, possible in preparation for Android phone

Feb 14, 2014

Nokia’s Facebook page has changed from the traditional Nokia blue to a much more Android-esque shade of green, leading to speculation that the Finnish company could unveil the rumoured Nokia X at any moment.

Nokia X, aka Normandy or A110, is thought to be Nokia’s first Android smartphone. But it should run a cut down version of Android 4.4 KitKat, similar to how Amazon uses the software in its Kindle range. That would mean services like Google Play and Maps wouldn’t come on the phone.

Nokia X might be faster than a Lumia 1020

Jan 30, 2014

Nokia’s rumoured Android phone, called Nokia X or Nokia Normandy, could be faster than the Lumia 1020 according to a supposed benchmarking test.

The test in question is called Browsermark and tests a phone’s speed online. As well as needing a decent internet connection and browser, a phone needs a good processor to score well.

The test shows that the Nokia X uses the Chrome browser and runs slightly faster than a Lumia 1020, which is interesting as the Android phone is meant to be at the bottom end of Nokia’s line-up.

Nokia Android phone photo leaks

Jan 16, 2014

A couple of tweets from an unknown leaker have apparently revealed the names and some details of Nokia’s flagship phones for 2014.

The first is the replacement for the Lumia 1020. Apparently called Lumia 1820, it’s said to have a 5.2” screen with 2K Ultra HD resolution, Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 805 processor with 3GB RAM and a massive 3,400mAh battery. The strangest thing, though, would be the screen, which is rumoured to act like a solar panel to recharge the phone.

The other flagship is a new phablet to replace the Lumia 1520. Called Lumia 1525 it’s said to have the same specs and features as the 1820, but with a bigger 6” screen.

While the rumours are exciting, we wouldn’t bet on anything until Nokia announces at least one of them, which could happen in March.

Nokia launches Lumia 1320 phablet

Dec 27, 2013

Nokia has released its second phablet, the Lumia 1320, in China ahead of a rumoured global rollout. While the new phone has a big 6” screen and huge 3,400mAh battery like the Lumia 1520, its other specs are lower.
The screen has a 720p HD resolution, the processor is a 1.7GHz dual core chip and there’s 1GB RAM. With the lower screen resolution and scaled down power, the massive battery should provide even more life than we get on the Lumia 1520, which has one of the best battery lives around. And these specs mean the phone should be exceptionally good value.
There’s no news yet on when the phone will come to Europe but we’d expect it to be quite soon.

Nokia smartwatch could be launched in 2014

Dec 23, 2013

Nokia is rumoured to be prepping a smartwatch for launch by September 2014 that could use Nokia Morph and Nokia Kinetic technology.

Nokia Morph is a concept that lets a gadget change its use by changing its size and shape. If this was used in the rumoured smartwatch, we might be able to bend it and fold it to reveal a larger screen that can be used as a tablet.

Nokia Kinetic is another concept that the Finnish company has shown off in the past. This would let you control the watch by bending and squeezing it.

If the smartwatch is released next year, it would still be Nokia branded as Microsoft is buying the smartphone section of the company that includes the likes of the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 520.
