Amanda Hill - Property Manager

“Because of The Carphone Warehouse policy of promoting from within wherever possible, I was a prime candidate to fill the newly created role.”

The Carphone Warehouse wasn’t the first company Amanda worked for after leaving Oxford Polytechnic with an HND in Building Studies. Her first position was with an architectural practice. However, she was curious to find out why two of her friends were getting so much satisfaction out of their jobs as sales consultants at the Carphone Warehouse. She was interviewed, and offered a position she has never regretted accepting.

“After two months with Direct Sales I moved to the Carphone Warehouse concession within Harrod’s. After four months there I was promoted to Carphone Warehouse Harrod’s Branch Manager. The company’s rapid expansion led to the creation of a new position, Property Manager, to help with the acquisition and maintenance of our growing network of stores. I applied for the post and the rest, as they say, is history - or perhaps in this case, geography. In my first year I was responsible for adding 33 new stores, bringing the company total to 55.”

“I couldn’t hope for a more encouraging, forward thinking employer than The Carphone Warehouse. All the effort I have put into my career has been repaid with personal and professional advancement.”

James Collins - Head of Direct Sales

“The Carphone Warehouse has offered me a unique opportunity to work within an environment where rewards and recognition are linked directly to achievement and your contribution to the growth of the business. At Carphone Warehouse you see your ideas being taken seriously and you know you make a difference.”

“After graduating with a political science degree, I started at ‘Direct’ in July 1995 as a sales consultant. I immediately loved the role - there was a constant challenge to set new sales records and beat your previous best. I was promoted to a team manager in December 1995 and set out to build a strong, focused well-rounded sales team. My team started off with five people and over the two years I built the team to eleven. We again strived to break records and constantly improve ourselves.”

“I was promoted to Sales Manager in September 1997. My day is very different now from when I was a Team Manager. My role now splits into four main areas; the first is to make sure that all staffing levels are sufficient and that the department runs smoothly on a day to day basis. Secondly, I focus on ways of improving the training within the department and making sure that all sales reps are trained on new products and services. Thirdly, I look at new ways to maintain and increase sales volumes through the department. This involves marketing and brand strategy. Lastly, I make sure the Team Managers and the sales reps are focused on achieving their personal targets and goals.”

“The atmosphere in Direct is always buzzing. There are over fifty sales people and seven managers. All the sales reps are very competitive and I work hard to make sure they all stay focused on their targets and personal goals. Everybody that comes through the Direct sales department cannot believe the atmosphere we have created. We all work well together as a team and it is that side of the job which is so enjoyable.”

“The best part of my role is the interaction with people and the chance to see people develop from sales representatives through to managers. The most exciting part of the job for me is being part of a company that is experiencing huge growth, therefore giving all of us massive opportunities.”

Justin Hanley - Service Engineer

Justin studied at the Dublin Institute of Technology where he completed his Diploma in Electrical Engineering. He joined The Carphone Warehouse in April 1997 as a Technician and twelve months later was promoted to Junior Engineer. In August 1998 Justin moved to our Oxford Street Branch as an Engineer where he is responsible for the day to day running of the repairs function. In 1999, Justin returned to the Republic of Ireland as the Service Centre Manager for all the Centres and is responsible for new openings as well as overall operational management.

"I always thought of the Carphone Warehouse as a Sales Company, I had no idea of the opportunities that were available within the Service Department. My intensive induction course gave me a full understanding of the role and focused on the analysis of analogue and GSM systems. The continual training has enabled me to progress within the Company."
